The Adoption
Process
The retired
racing greyhounds placed through GPA Salt Lake are usually
between 18 months and four years old. These ex-racers are
intelligent, quiet, clean, gentle, good-natured dogs that
adjust readily to “life as a pet” and will regard their new
owners with never-ending affection. Whether you are a
family looking for a playful friend or an individual looking
for a devoted companion, a well-mannered greyhound could be
just the pet for you! Before filling out an application,
please read the important information we have provided
throughout our website and
contact us
if you have
any questions.
GPA Salt Lake requires an
adoption of fee of at least $195.00 toward our costs of
getting your greyhound ready for you. (Please
for cost
details.) This includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations,
any other necessary vet work such as a dental, and
transportation costs. You will also receive a Premier©
martingale collar with leash, a muzzle, and an adoption
packet filled with helpful tips, resources, and useful
information about your retired racer. Your greyhound will
have a bath, toenails will be clipped, and teeth will be
brushed before you pick him or her up.
Seniors are very special, and so is their adoption fee!
There are many senior greyhounds around the country, all of
whom deserve nothing more than to spend their remaining
years in the lush comforts of a loving home. GPA Salt Lake
wants to help make that happen whenever we can! Most of
these seniors are currently living on farms or in
out-of-state kennels, so will not appear with our other
available dogs. If you are willing to give a “golden
greyhound” a home just let us know! The following special
adoption fees will apply:
Most of our greyhounds come from Colorado,
but at times we may bring dogs in from other parts of the
country. If your application is approved, we check first to
see if there is a greyhound in one of our foster homes
within Salt Lake that fits the profile you’ve provided to
us. If your dog has been in a foster home he or she will
have started to learn about “home life”.
If no current fosters fit the bill, your
greyhound will be brought from out of state. By working
closely with kennel trainers and adoption group volunteers
in Colorado and other states, we are able to profile the
perfect dog for you. These people know their greyhounds
better than anyone! In order to avoid unnecessary trips and
keep our adoption fee low, we will usually have 3 other dogs
brought to us along with the one meant just for you. These
dogs will go to wonderful foster homes if they don’t already
have adopters waiting.
One great thing about having your dog
profiled for you is that you are protected from the “impulse
adoption”. Most of us can fall in love with those big brown
doggy eyes in mere seconds if given the chance, and once the
spell has been cast it is hard to resist. This is the
reason many dogs and puppies are adopted no questions asked,
only to be given up because of personality conflicts or
behaviors that the adopter never knew about or expected.
However, it can be hard to trust that someone else will be
able to pick out your perfect greyhound, and we understand
that. If this is the case for you, ask us about fostering
with intent.
Once your application is approved, we do our
best to make sure your dog is ready and available within 2
weeks (unless you request a later date to bring your new
greyhound home). When we place a dog, our primary concerns
are that we have made the best match possible and that the
greyhound is well rested and ready for adoption; therefore
in some situations it may take longer than 2 weeks. On the
other hand, it might only be a matter of days!
Please remember that if at
all possible you should have a minimum of 2 days off of work
in order to help your greyhound get settled. For example,
you might request to receive your dog on a Friday evening if
you have the weekends off. The first days can be a scary
time for a retired racer; after all, his whole world has
just changed. Your being there will help to ease his fears,
create a deep bond, and ensure a successful transition into
“pet life”.

These numbers are based on the average costs in Salt
Lake for the services listed. Thanks to the
generosity and assistance of several area
veterinarians, and the fact that we transport groups
of dogs, we are able to request just $195.00 for an
adoption fee. However, we often pay much more than
that amount in getting a dog ready for adoption. We
also have many administrative costs such as printing
for brochures and other public materials, office
supplies, filing and renewing state and federal
paperwork, postage, insurance, etcetera. GPA Salt
Lake has no paid employees. In order for us to keep
our adoption fees so low we depend solely upon the
help of volunteers, foster homes, and donations to
keep us afloat and help us reach the public. If you
