Become a Foster Home

Nan Lassiter, a member of the Greytalk community and a long-time volunteer for her local greyhound adoption group, Greyhound Crossroads, has put together this wonderful video tribute to the hounds she and her family have fostered over the years.  It really serves to illustrate that fostering a greyhound will forever leave a pawprint on your heart!  Turn on your volume, grab a tissue, and click here to watch this wonderful tribute: You’ll Be In My Heart  (Used by permission - 5.5MB download)

GPA Salt Lake is in need of loving, responsible people willing to temporarily share their home with a greyhound.  You need not be an experienced greyhound owner to apply.  Foster homes may have children or other pets.  As a foster “parent”, your responsibilities would be:

  • To provide the greyhound with food, shelter, safety, love and guidance during his or her stay with you.  (GPA Salt Lake will provide you with food for your foster hound whenever we are able to do so.)
  • To help the greyhound become acclimated to “home life”.  This may entail familiarizing the hound with stairs and windows, household appliances, other animals, “alone training”, etc.
  • Foster homes are in a great position to help GPA Salt Lake find the perfect adopter for their hound!  Take your foster dog on outings and walks when you can, and give our contact information to anyone who seems interested in adopting.
  • As a foster, we would request from time to time that you bring your furry houseguest to our events, group walks, vet appointments, and/or meet n’ greets.  If you can’t join us, a GPA volunteer may take the dog to the event/vet appointment.  We may call to schedule a time for a perspective adopter to meet your foster.
  • Foster “parents” are asked to fill out questionnaires and/or provide GPA Salt Lake with regular updates on the foster dog.  This way, we can provide the public with the best and most accurate information on your foster dog’s personality, progress, and characteristics.

A foster home may have the greyhound with them for anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.  In special situations it may be longer.  Whatever length of time you are willing to commit will be “greytfully” received.  In return for fostering a greyhound, you will receive the priceless gift of unending love and gratitude from the retired racer(s) that you help!  There are no words to express how much we value and appreciate a good foster parent.  You will also get the first opportunity to adopt your foster hound, should that perfect one come along and race into your heart!

Please fill out this application if you are interested in fostering a greyhound.
